This recipe is one of the few that I have from my great-grandmother (who we always called Gaga), and was passed to me by my mother (still have the original hand-written version, although the ink has faded over the decades). This is a classic comfort food for me and my family. The smell of it baking reminds me of brunches with Gaga, and with the big extended family. We eat it less now, as it is not low-fat, but is a special treat on some weekends. Importantly, do not breathe in as you are eating a piece of it--everyone inevitably inhales the powdered sugar!

Protocol

  1. Sift dry ingredients in bowl
  2. Drop in shortening, add milk and vanilla, and beat 150 strokes or 1 1/2 minute by hand or by mixer on low. Scrape bowl and spoon or beater.
  3. Add egg and beat 1 1/2 minute again.
  4. For crumbs, mix dry ingredients. Melt margarine and shortening together and pour over dry ingredients. Mix with fork or fingers until crumbly.
  5. Pour batter into a greased 13x9x2 pan or 8x9 plus 6 cupcakes. Sprinkle with crumbs and bake at 350° F for 30 minutes or until done (quits “singing”).
  6. When cool, shake powdered sugar on top of crumb cake.
